Money Map

Who raises what in Sacramento — every figure a sum of filed records, nothing estimated. Top donors, independent expenditures, gifts and travel, and who gives to both sides.

Cycle: 2023-01-01 → present · feed current through ~May 2026 (late-2026 filings lag — rebuild before the general election). Donor-type labels are heuristic, classified from the filed name — not official designations. Independent-expenditure records carry no dates and no support/oppose stance. Behested payments (Form 803) are not in this dataset. Money overlap = name-match heuristic. Every figure is traceable to its filed records — verify anything over $25k in Cal-Access before putting it in front of a client.

Methodology

How the figures were built

Sources

Authoritative source: Cal-Access (CA Secretary of State). Access path: the public record feed of CalMatters Digital Democracy, a nonprofit newsroom database ingesting filed SOS records. Direct SOS routes were bot-gated at build time. No figure is estimated, rounded beyond cents, or invented.

What "total raised" means

Sum of in-cycle monetary contributions received (itemized + unitemized, schedules A/C). Excludes loans, non-monetary/in-kind, committee transfers — it is not cash-on-hand. Sub-$100 unitemized buckets count in totals but are excluded from donor rankings.

Donor roll-up

Contributions grouped per legislator by normalized donor name; committee variants merged (PAC/SCC suffixes, CA/CALIFORNIA, typos) with canonical-actor rules for the largest donors. Byte-identical feed duplicates collapsed to one (conservative). Residual long-tail splits are possible — verify large figures.

Behested payments: not included

FPPC Form 803 behested-payment reports are filed by payors through a separate SOS search and are absent from this feed by design — this view has no behested data. Pull behests from the SOS/FPPC behested-payments search before advising on official-adjacent giving.
